What You Will Learn

Loosen up your compositions, explore your own expressive marks + choices, gain confidence in your problem solving skills, and create your unique visual language.

  • We will explore the meaning of 'abstraction' and locate ways that we can practice abstracting, taking steps toward loosening up our landscapes

  • Using your own collage fodder, I'll show you how to make personalized + unique collage papers by picking up paint on your palette, as well as some techniques using the gel plate

  • I will show you, step-by-step, how to make and use transparent glazes so you can begin to add layers of transparencies to your abstract work

  • I demonstrate how I use collage and glazes to abstract my landscapes, as well as rework a painting to make it less representational/descriptive and more abstract

  • In our Class Studies Project, we will take our time developing 4 abstract landscape studies, creating layers using marks, collage paper and glazes

  • Problem Solving is a crucial skill that we can learn and practice, enabling us to trust the process of creating layered abstract paintings. I will teach you the questions I ask while attempting to solve problems, as well as show the process of trying potential solutions

  • In real time, I demonstrate creating an abstracted landscape from start to finish, layering glazes, collage, and making marks, all while problem solving. In the end, I show you my varnishing and protecting process

The Layered Landscape

How the Class is Structured

We will start at the top with the concept of "abstracting the landscape", gaining understanding about what abstracting is, and how to begin to develop our own abstracting process. Moving out from there in both directions, we will learn to make collage papers and how to layer with glazes. This culminates in our Class Studies Project where we integrate all 3 components in a logical order.

Yes, I have supplied English subtitles for those that want them. You can turn them off or on by clicking the 'cc' in the lower part of your video screen while viewing a lesson in class.

  • Do I have to have everything on the supply list to be able to take the class?

The supply list is grouped into sections of essential items as well as items that can be substituted or are optional, and you'll find them clearly indicated. If you find that there are items that you cannot source, simply find the best substitute you can, and you can adapt it.

Marabeth Quin

Instructor

I’m Marabeth Quin, a mixed media collage artist who is dedicated to merging technical mastery with a deep understanding of the emotional/mental influences that shape artistic expression. I love to help fellow artists uncover the critical connection between their potential and their capacity to embrace the sometimes chaotic path of creation because that's what has helped me to keep growing and learning. My classes foster resilience, embracing imperfection, and cultivating self-compassion as foundational pieces of the artistic journey.
